Process for a company to utilize EMSAL (Nanofab services)

A. You want Nanofab EMSAL staff to analyze materials and data for you.

  1. Submit a work authorization form:
    Off Campus Work Authorization Form
  2. Email EMSAL lab manager:
    Brian Van Devener (van-devener@utah.edu) to discuss what you need measured and what instrument(s) or techniques you need, and whether or not an NDA is needed.

B. You want to have one of your employees trained to use instrument(s) in the Nanofab EMSAL

  1. Submit a work authorization form for each of your employees who are to be trained:

  2. Complete an RCA (Recharge Center Agreement) document. Contact EMSAL manager for this:

  3. Email EMSAL lab manager:
    Brian Van Devener (van-devener@utah.edu) to discuss what you need measured and what instrument(s) or techniques you need, and whether or not an NDA is needed. Schedule a date for training.
  4. Complete an off-campus door access card form:

  5. If, and only if, you will need to use any of the following X-ray producing instruments: NanoCT, SAXS, XPS, XRD, XRF, you must complete University Radiation Safety training. Note this step is only required if you will be trained on NanoCT, SAXS, XPS, XRD, XRD.
    Send Brian Van Devener an email and provide a DOB and email address for each employee that needs to be trained. This is required to sponsor each of your employees as an affiliate of the U of Utah which is required for access to U of Utah Radiation safety training.
  6. Complete Radiation Training Part 1: General Radiation Safety Online Training

  7. Complete Analytical Xray Training from the Radiation Safety Office
    EHS RSO Analytical Tool X-ray training
  8. Once your employee is trained, and has an account created from the work authorization form (see step 1.), then they can access the reservation calendar for instruments to reserve time on the instruments they are trained on:
