New Instrument Hourly Rates Starting January 1, 2026!!!
Dear All,
I'm sending a friendly reminder to let you know about upcoming rate increases on selected services in the Nanofab EMSAL, effective January, 1 2026. This change is necessary due to increased costs of maintaining and supporting the instruments in the lab.
By making this strategic increase, we can continue providing the high-quality imaging and characterization services you expect from us. We’ve kept price increases to a minimum to lessen the impact on you.
For your reference, I’m attaching an updated rates list here (EMSAL rates 2026). Page 1 has on-campus rates, Page 2 off-campus academic, and page 3 industry.
We sincerely appreciate your business and value our relationship. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
Best regards,
BrianSeptember 2025
SEM & XRD 1-Day Workshop Offering on October 6, 2025The Electron Microscopy and Surface Analysis Lab (EMSAL) is offering its first ever 1-day SEM & XRD Workshop. The workshop will focus on teaching basic theory and operation of a state-of-the-art SEM and High-Resolution XRD located in the University of Utah Nanofab EMSAL. Lectures, hands on demonstrations, and food will be provided.
The SEM portion will cover: imaging modalities on conductive and non-conductive materials, elemental analysis and mapping with EDS, EBSD, and an introduction to micromechanical testing in the SEM. XRD will cover the basics of the analysis of powders, solids and thin films, including: θ/2θ measurements, indexing, reciprocal space mapping, XRR of thin films, residual stress, 2D scans, and an introduction to in-situ XRD measurements. This workshop is limited to 12 registrants, and registration is on a first come/first serve basis To register, go to this link <https://forms.gle/5tZCVk1cttmjHmwv6>. Or scan the QR code below. Students must pay the sign-up fee on or before *September 29th to complete registration. If you don’t, you’ll lose your spot. Payments can be made through these links: U of U students: https://pay.utah.edu/now/payment.html?App_Type=007X&Item_Num=EMSAL101 Industry: https://pay.utah.edu/now/payment.html?App_Type=007X&Item_Num=EMSAL102 For more information go to emsal.nanofab.utah.edu or contact Dr. Brian Van Devener (b.van-devener@utah.edu)

NEW!!! Cold Stage for Bruker XRD We are excited to announce that our new -180 C to + 450 C stage for the Bruker Discover D8 XRD in the Nanofab is ready to use! This device will enable XRD measurements from -180 C to +450 C, that can be done under ambient, inert gas, or hi-vacuum conditions. More information can be found in this brochure (1 D8 MTC LowTemp PS41 2012). To discuss your application or schedule time for an experiment, please contact: Dr. Brian Van Devener(b.van-devener@utah.edu) and Dr. Bobby Duersch (b.duersch@utah.edu)

2025 SEM Short Course Starting in JulyThe Electron Microscopy and Surface Analysis Lab (EMSAL) will hold its annual Summer SEM Training Program. The Short Course will be held weekly starting the week of July 14 until August 11, 2025. It will cover training on the operation of the JEOL JSM IT200, Quanta FEG and Teneo SEMs highlighting each instrument's capabilities. A demo on the high-resolution Helios Nanolab 650 focused ion beam SEM is also included in the package.

Newly Installed Instrument!!!We are pleased to announce the arrival of the new MTR-3XR test frame from MicroTesting Solutions, LLC (MTSL). The test rig can perform mechanical, electrical and thermal testing procedures on samples while undergoing tensile and compression loading. Testing can be done on micro- to nano-scale features. The test rig is compatible with our Quanta SEM, Teneo SEM and the Zeiss Xradia Versa 620 micro-CT x-ray microscope, allowing for simultaneous imaging of the deformation behavior. The piezo actuator can travel up to 150 nm with a step resolution of <1 nm. The test rig stage can accommodate samples up to 8 mm in size. Load range can go up to 1.0 N (100 g) with <1uN sensitivity. We are currently in the final stage of the installation and fixing some software communication issues but we expect it to be fully functional in the next few weeks.
